Beyond Local

Professor Alford is the University of South Alabama's Liaison to the Gulf Coast Association of Creative Writing Teachers, an organization that draws creative writing teachers from Louisiana to Georgia and  Florida.  He was a Visiting Professor at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where he was invited by the novelist Olympia Vernon. He is a member of the Pacific Northwest Writers Association because of his ties with Anne Mini, the step-daughter of renowned science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick.  Mini has worked closely with Alford in the editing and revising of his novel.

In 2008 professor Alford read at the Poetry SouthWest, The Alabama Book Festival's poetry venue
Featured poets from Red Hen Press, California's leading independent publisher, and Alabama, Kentucky and Georgia were presented.  This poetry stage promoted a cross-country fertilization of Alabama's vibrant literary landscape with other states.  Presses from Alabama that were represented included Elk River Review Press, Negative Capability, River City Publishing.

In addition to Red Hen Press, other presses included Fleur de Lys Press, Houghton Mifflin, Settlement House Press, Southern Illinois University Press, Tebot Bach Press, and Tupelo Press.

Some of the authors in attendance included: Pulitzer prize winner, Natasha Trethewey (Native Guard, Houghton Mifflin); Nickole Brown (Sister: Poems, Red Hen Press); Pulitzer prize winner Jake Adam York (A Murmuration of Starlings, SIU Press); and Emma Bolden, Edge by Edge, Toad Lily Press).
